
The health officials in Florida has informed that one case of Zika-related microcephaly has been detected. It is a birth defect that affected an infant. The mother was infected in her home country of Haiti.
Gov. Rick Scott has asked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to work with Florida's medical community to discuss about the precautions that the other new and expecting mothers should take.
Scott said, “It is heartbreaking to learn that a baby has been born with Zika-related microcephaly in our state and my thoughts and prayers are with the mother and child.” He also wrote "The Olympics will begin in less than 40 days and millions of Americans will travel through our state to and from Brazil, a country where the Zika virus is rapidly spreading, and we must be prepared."
Microcephaly is a disease in which a baby born with an abnormally small head which results in underdeveloped brain according to the CDC. This disease lasts a lifetime and may create several problems like intellectual disabilities, feeding problems, hair loss, vision problems, speech problems, problems with movement, development problems etc.
Florida has confirmed 183 cases of Zika infections as of Tuesday. According to the department of health, everyone of them were infected while they were outside the country.
