Forced to pick cotton, grow cannabis, prostitute themselves, fight wars or clean up after the wealthy-some 35.8 million people are currently trapped in modern-day slavery, a new report said Monday.

The second annual Global Slavery Index said new methods showed some 20 per cent more people were enslaved across the world than originally thought.

Its definition of slavery includes debt bondage, forced marriage and the sale or exploitation of children, as well as human trafficking and forced labour.

The report, which covers 167 countries, said modern slavery contributed to the production of at least 122 goods from 58 countries.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates profits from this forced labour are $150 billion (120 billion euros) a year.

From the Thai fisherman trawling fishmeal, to the Congolese boy mining diamonds, from the Uzbek child picking cotton, to the Indian girl stitching footballs... their forced labour is what we consume," read the report.

The highest population which enslaved is the west African nation Mauritania were slavery of blacks moors enriched by the Berber Arabs.

Though the Mauritania has anti-slavery legislation but it failed and rarely implemented ,tribunal set up in March not yet any cases prosecuted ,the report said.

Countries like Netherlands, Sweden, the United States, Australia, Switzerland, Ireland, Norway, the United Kingdom, Georgia, and Austria are among which are taking action to reduce slavery.

Though India has taken some steps to control but still it has 14.29 million enslaved.

Modern slavery exist in every country,we all are responsible for this situation said forrest.

The country that is most marked by slavery, though, is clearly India. There are an estimated 14.29 million enslave slaves in India – it would be as if the entire population of Pennsylvania were forced into slavery.

The country suffers deeply from all major forms of slavery, according to the report. Forced labor is common, due in part to a system of hereditary debt bondage; many Indian children are born "owing" sums they could never possibly pay to masters who control them as chattel their entire lives.

Others fall into forced labor when they move to a different region looking for work, and turn to an unlicensed "broker" who promises work but delivers them into servitude.

The country's caste system and widespread discrimination abet social norms that make it easier to turn a blind eye to the problem. Women and girls from underprivileged classes are particularly vulnerable to sexual slavery, whether under the guise of "child marriages" or not, although men and boys often fall victim as well.
