Four Indian American Teen Girls Awarded $25,000 Each for Inventions in Combating Air, Water Pollution March 23, 2019 05:14

Indian students abroad are availing oneself of all possible times to make the home country proud. This time four Indian American teenagers have been awarded $25,000 each for developing groundbreaking approaches to address environmental issues. The recipients of the award are Anjali Chadha (16) of Kentucky, Preeti Sai Krishnamani (17) of Delaware, Navami Jain (17) of North Carolina and Sai Preethi Mamidala (17) of Pennsylvania, the American Bazaar daily reported.Chadha, currently a student at duPont Manual Magnet High School, has built a device that is a sensor for detecting arsenic, a harmful substance known to cause cancer, in well water sources. She was inspired to develop the sensor when she discovered that groundwater within 90 miles of her home was contaminated with arsenic.Almost around 50 million Americans use well water as their primary source and could be at risk for contamination.Krishnamani’s goal was to combat arsenic contamination in rice. "The way I am trying to do that is by enhancing soil minerals that can bind up arsenic and make it inaccessible to rice plants," she told the American Bazaar. Her solution is silicon amendments - rice husk and rice husk ash - which are waste products of rice production and can be recycled into paddies to eventually combat arsenic contamination in the crop.Jain performed a series of evaluations looking at different ways to produce bio-ethanol, a type of biofuel that is considered greener to conventional fossil energy sources as it is biodegradable and non-toxic."The major controversy around ethanol production is that it is being produced from food-based crops like corn. I'm looking at ways to produce it from agricultural-based matter and different waste products such as wheat straw," she said. Her results indicated that producing bio-ethanol from wheat straw may increase efficiency and lower costs.Mamidala, driven by the effects of fossil-fuel pollution in India, studied an optimal catalyst to make renewable energy more accessible.A senior at Garnet Valley High School in Glen Mills, she examined the catalyst in "a fuel cell that can store energy while it is being produced and generate it when it is needed. The actual catalyst being used in the fuel cell makes a world of difference in its performance".The four teenagers are all finalists of this year's Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation's oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors.By Sowmya Sangam

Summer Fashion 2019: Best Fabrics to Get Through the Summer Heat March 22, 2019 13:29

The summer season is here and as constant sweat triggers irritation, the cry out for some fabrics which make you refreshing will surpass. There are some fabrics in which you can still be comfortable in the scorching heat. Thus, it is important for you to take a closer look at the fabrics you opt to wear in summer, say, experts. Narendra Kumar, Creative Director at Amazon Fashion, and designer duo Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna share which fabric to pick in summer. Linen                        (Image source from: Etsy) This relaxed vibe fabric will effortlessly complement any look simultaneously keep you cool. A loosely woven fabric allows heat to escape from the body and dries quickly. It crumbles easily, which is the only thing you need to be wary of. Pair a crop top or t-shirt with linen pants to look contemporary. Cotton                   (Image source from: Tissura) Cotton allows air to circulate and move freely through the fabric, absorbing moisture. Put on pretty cotton dresses, skirts, and shirts to look modish yet comfortable. Easy breezy light-weight cotton chinos work best when it comes to bottoms, go for a lycra blend for added comfort. Opting for lighter colors is Opt for lighters colors to beat the heat. Khadi                      (Image source from: Merakus) Handwoven, it is primarily spun with cotton and sometimes, wool and silk. Even without any added embroidery, it has an unusual appeal. Whether as a Nehru style jacket, kurta or sari, this fabric adopts a versatile look. Polyester Athleisure and sportswear highly work with polyester. This fabric is extremely durable and water-resistant. However, for people who sweat extremely, putting on this fabric is a nightmare. While it is low-cost and remains relatively wrinkle-free through numerous uses, polyester outfits are best kept in your wardrobe for summer workouts and swimwear. Denim                       (Image source from: Toccoa Falls College) Summer is the time for denim shorts, skirts and dungarees galore. It's actually a highly impractical choice. It is not breathable and the fit is fairly restrictive, making it a bad choice for the summer. A useful tip is to stick to chambray, which looks very much like denim but is lightweight and breathable, unlike denim. Flowy Fabrics                      (Image source from: Pinterest) Certain flowy silks like light chiffons and georgettes are great for evenings as these fabrics naturally adjust to your body temperature. However, breezy summer wear is more than just choosing the right fibre, even the colour should be considered. Opt for pastel shades with subtle prints instead of opting for dark and deep hues. With the heat just too much to take in just at the early start of summers, it is bound to increase more in the days to come. So pick the right fabrics and be cool through the heat. By Sowmya Sangam

Indian Techies Returning Home as U.S. Rejects Visa Extensions March 22, 2019 13:13

Thousands of Indian techies living in the United States are arriving home as the United States authorities have refused visa extensions and while some are still making every effort over filing a new H-1B visa. An engineer, who returned to India nine months ago, tells Economic Times that "shifting with a kid who was born in the U.S. was challenging".Though the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) this week said it would resume premium processing of the H-1B visa, Indian IT firms are still struggling with the extension of the visas.According to industry experts, tightening of the visa process is primarily due to the change in regime that has focused on securing more jobs for Americans.Generally, the visa is issued for three years and can further be extended for another three years. Following the expiry of the second term of the H-1B visa, one can seek for RFEs, a request issued by the USCIS to petitioners for residency, citizenship, family visas, and employment visas. Apart from the increase in outright denials, there has also been a sharp rise in the number of Requests For Evidence (RFE). The RFEs are usually issued at the time they seek the first extension, or when applying for Green cards. The wait for Green cards for Indians can be as long as 10 years. Many techies told Economic Times that since the chances of REF approval was very low, they had to pack their bags and return to India. In 2018 five Indian Information Technology services companies together accounted for two-thirds, or 8,742, of the 13,177 H-1B extension petitions rejected from 30 technology companies, think tank Centre for Immigration Studies said, citing USCIS dataAccording to USCIS, Indian nationals accounted for about 2.2 million of the 3.4 million H-1B visa petitions filed in the decade to 2017.The time taken to process H-1B application increased from 3.2 months in the fiscal year 2018 to 5.2 months in the fiscal year 2019In a new rule, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said that it would start accepting new H1-B visa petitions for the fiscal year 2020 starting April 1.By Sowmya Sangam
