Police are investigating a Melbourne homicide after a man was shot and killed in a neighborhood street early Monday morning. Police received reports of gunfire on to the 3000 block of Mt. Carmel Lane just after 3 a.m. Several gunshots were heard in the area before the unidentified victim was found dead, according to Lt. Scott Mostert with Melbourne Police Department.

"We don't have any suspect information on this time," Mostert said.  "It was a pretty lengthy crime scene. It appears most of the crime scene was outdoors," he added.

Police had cordoned off a home at the corner of Mt. Carmel Lane and Canby Drive while crime scene technicians collected evidence down the street. Residents in the neighborhood, which occupies a nook in the northeast corner of Babcock Street and Palm Bay Road, said it's usually quiet and the shooting was  unexpected.

Elijah Cantave, who has been living in the neighborhood for about six months, said the shooting has him "a little shaken up."

"It was me and my roommate. We heard about five shots," Cantave said. "A little later after that, lot of cops were here. I didn't see the body, but there was a body covered up right behind my car right here."
