The life of Florida’s deputy is at risk, as the deputy shot and killed an unarmed man who attacked and bit also him, said a sheriff.
The Osceola County Sheriff Russ Gibson said that Deputy John Stubbs was justified in the shooting of Carlos Garcia Petrovich on Sunday, reported the Orlando Sentinel.
"The deputy thought his life was in peril. He was alone and called for backup. . He did what he had to do to end that threat on his life," said Gibson.
Stubbs has originally stopped Petrovich on the suspicion of drunken driving on the late Saturday night, but the police report said that Petrovich fled from the scene. Later, Stubbs spotted Petrovich at the nearby Pilot gas station early on Sunday morning and he attempted to arrest him.
The report said that Petrovich started running and Stubbs gave a chase on foot around the gas station while calling for the backup. Once Stubbs caught up with Petrovich after the chase, the suspect attacked Stubbs and bit him, as per the report filed. That is when Stubbs has shot and killed Petrovich, said Gibson.
Stubbs was treated at the local hospital for superficial injuries.
Gibson had declined to tell the Sentinel whether whether Stubbs was carrying either a stun gun or a baton. Gibson said that his department does not have the body cameras and also Stubbs did not have a dash camera in order to record the altercation.
The incident is still in investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
