After BJP gained majority seats in Goa with the help of local alliance, Manhoar Parrikar resigned his position as the defence minister to take the new role of Goa chief minister.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitely will be given the additional charge of the defence minister.
The resignation of Parrikar as the defence minister, on the advice of PM Narendra Modi was accepted with immediate effect, a Rashtrapati Bhawan communique said.
"Further, as advised by the Prime Minister, the President has directed that Arun Jaitely, cabinet minister, shall be assigned the charge of the ministry of defence, in addition to his existing portfolios," the communique said.
Parrikar will be sworn in as the chief minister of Goa tomorrow (14th March) heading the BJP lead ministry with the support of regional outfits and Independents.
This is the second time that Arun Jaitely is holding the additional position of Defence Ministry during the current NDA government.
Earlier from May 26th to November 9th in 2016, Jaitely was in-charge of the ministry.
