Largest frog in the world: a threat to the pets

A poisonous toad the cane, or Bufo toad which is known living in Central and South America, has found its way into the areas across the state from the Florida Keys to Lake Okeechobee, and up to Tampa Bay. The toads were introduced to the state in the 1950s through the farming industry, with a hope that they would help with pest control in sugar cane fields.

According to National Geographic, these are the largest frogs in the world, growing to nearly 10 inches. They have become deadly particularly to dogs and other pets this time of year when the toads get the most active and numerous during the mating season that runs from March to September .

Joshua Parra, a veterinarian with the Florida Veterinary Referral Center & 24-hour Emergency Hospital in Fort Myers said, "Usually when we see the weather we have right now, the constant rains on a daily basis, within about two or three weeks we start getting clients calling and complaining about a dog that’s foaming at the mouth.

According to National Geographic Cane toad venom is a cocktail of toxins that initially affects the functioning of the heart. The venom is present throughout their bodies and is secreted as a milky liquid from the parotoid glands located over the toad's shoulders.
