Bhandari elected as Judge of International Court of Justice

The nominee from India for the coveted post of Judge of International Court of Justice (ICJ) was on Friday elected to ICJ in the elections that took place in New York of United States of America.

Justice Dalveer Bhandari becomes the Judge of the International Court of Justice. He has defeated 84-year-old Justice Florentino of Philippines in the elections to become the Justice.  Dalveer has expressed his happiness for becoming the Judge of ICJ. He will be in this post for a period of six years. Also, after he completes his term, he can apply for re-election and in case elected, he would then continue for another nine years.  It has to be mentioned here that Bhandari has secured as many as 122 votes  in the General Assembly and 13 votes in the Security Council.

The International Court of Justice is the one of the principal bodies of the United Nations. There are totally 15 Judges at the International Court of Justice out of which three seats are reserved for Asia.

The 64-year-old Justice has vast experience in the field of law and for his eminent services, he has received many awards and rewards. It is really a moment of pride for all Indians as an Indian citizen got elected for the highest court in the world. (Phani)
