International Literacy Day 2016: NGO to receive UNESCO literacy prize in Paris

How we can forget that today, 8th September is the International Literacy day. And it is a significant achievement on this day, that a Kerala-based NGO is going to receive the prestigious UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy for its literacy-linked skill development activities at a ceremony in Paris.

The Jan Sikshan Sansthan (JSS), based in state’s Malappuram, has clinched the award for its activities in the field of lifelong education and skill development programme in rural areas, to help underprivileged individuals achieve better livelihood.

JSS Malappuram chairman and Rajya Sabha member PV Abdul Wahab and the unit’s director V Ummerkoya will receive the award at the ceremony which will mark 50th anniversary celebrations of UNESCO’s literacy programmes.

The global celebration will be held at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris in the form of a two-day conference on September 8 th and 9th.

The Education Ministers from UNESCO’s member states are supposed to attend the function, in which third edition of Global Report on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE 3) will be launched.

A panel discussion will be held to identify inter-relations between literacy and other sustainable development goals. The statement said that the MP will present his views on implementing a programme adopting an inter-sectoral approach connecting literacy with agriculture and other livelihoods.

He will also answer the challenge for such a programme and methods to overcome it during the panel discussion which will be moderated by , Chief of Section, Chakroun Borhene, Youth, Literacy and Skill Development, UNESCO and presented by Arne Carlsen, Director of UNSECO Institute for Lifelong Learning.
