Mumbai police, on Wednesday, held a 17-year-old pizza delivery boy for allegedly trying to assault and murder a woman as well as steal her gold chain and mobile phone. The victim, an IT engineer, who is now battling for life in the ICU of Hinduja Hospital, suffered multiple head injuries and stab wounds and is said to be in a critical condition.

The 17-year-old accused, a resident of Worli Koliwada and working in Chovisam Pizza outlet in Prabhadevi, was detained in the wee hours of Wednesday.

During the interrogation, the accused confessed to his heinous crime, the Worli police said. According to the recorded statement, the accused delivered the pizza to the victim at around 7.45 pm on Tuesday and left. He returned 10 minutes later, and finding her alone in the house, tried to sexually abuse and later murder her by slashing her wrists and pounding her head with a grindstone.

"We have filed a case of attempt to murder and attempt to rape against him," said Senior Police Inspector Deepak Pawar.

The victim, hailing from Wardha district,  arrived in Mumbai for work only three months ago. She lived with her aunt in Dr. Annie Besant Road.

The victim was rushed to the hospital by her neighbor, who after listening to the commotion, broke into the house and found her lying unconscious and bleeding.

The police traced the accused through her mobile service provider. They went through her call records and discovered that the last call was made to the Prabhadevi pizza outlet.
