Nicolas Maduro to be next Venezuelan president

The electoral officials of Venezuela have declared that a successor to Hugo Chavez has been elected in the presidential elections that concluded today after a neck to neck competition. The Union Socialist Party's candidate Nicolas Maduro won with a short majority over the opponent candidate Henrique Capriles.

Maduro had a vote bank of 50.8% in his favor against the 49.1 percent votes in Henrique's favor. The latter was defeated by a little over 300,000 votes. Maduro campaigned in the nation promising the people that he would carry on the socialist revolution that Chavez had started in his own style and managed to defeat Henrique who claimed that the president's style was deteriorating the nation's standards.

The presidential elections were forced after the recent death of Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela. The 58 year old battled cancer for two years and conceded later. His image among the poor of the nation is on par with a legend.
