Taiwanese activist's tree top protest

Protesting against a government's decision takes a lot of courage and determination. One activist in Taiwan had more tha just the prerequisites. He staged a protest sitting atop a tree while opposing a development project which is reportedly being refused by more than 3000 locals. Monday would mark his 12th day.

Pan Han-chiang says, he would not come down until the local council will forget the idea of the controversial development project to build a swimming pool and an underground parking lot in the school's ground.

The incident is one of the most happening incidents in New Tapei City on the outskirts of the capital. In Panchiao district the local school grounds in a junior high has received clearances for a development project that several activist's object as unnecessary.

Several school members, teachers and alumni opposed the idea of re-planting the 32 40 year old trees from the grounds quoting several reasons. While many said that the trees are a major part of their memories and removing them only meant crushing their memories of the place, a few others had environmental concerns that the plants wouldn't grow when they are replanted since they are mature.

Pan, the 46 year old activist, has been getting food from supporters handing him food from the ground. He has refused to come down from the trees since March 28th. Currently he has been successful in bring all work to an impasse.
