For Indian Sports Ministry, late Indian hockey player Dhyan Chand seemed a more deserving candidate for country's highest civilian award “Bharat Ratna” over cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar. Hence, they decided to nominate the three-time Olympic gold medallist for the title, posthumously.

Defending their nomination, Pradip Deb, secretary sports, said, "We had to name just one sportsperson for the Bharat Ratna and it was Dhyan Chand. With all due respect to Tendulkar, Dhyan Chand is a legend in Indian sports. And it was logical to recommend Dhyan Chand for the Bharat Ratna since we have named every other trophy after him."

Hockey India (HI), which had earlier recommended Dhyan Chand's name for the honor, was only too happy to receive the news.
