Effective 1 October 2015, Air India relocated domestic operations from to Terminal 2 (T2), of the Mumbai airport, from the Santa Cruz airport so as to integrate international operation with domestic flights. From T2, 63 flights would be operated out of Mumbai out of which 52 are to domestic destinations. With this, Star Alliance members would also be able to transfer passengers easily.

Air India Chairman and Managing Director Ashwani Lohani said that, “Today we have moved our entire operations under one roof, which is a much more efficient way of handling transfers and provide the best experience to our passengers. It is a great beginning for us at the new terminal and our people are charged up and excited. We will look to make Mumbai a second hub for Air India.”

According to Air India Mumbai would be made its second hub after Delhi. Interestingly, since its inception, Mumbai was the home base of Air India. From Mumbai, most of the international flights were operated until the Air India’s headquarters were shifted to Delhi from the UPA government. The UPA government made the Delhi airport its base and main hub.

Star Alliance CEO Mark Schwab said, “With commencement of domestic operations here, Air India has taken the next step in the evolution of its Star Alliance membership. At present, we have 11 member carriers connecting Mumbai with 20 international destinations in 14 countries. Our customers can now enjoy a simpler, smoother and faster transfer experience, when they connect to and from any of Air India’s 30 domestic destinations served from Mumbai.”
